YSL Goes Green (and Saves Some Too)

Images of the "New Vintage II" tag

Fashion-loving tree huggers rejoice! Yves Saint Laurent announced Tuesday morning the beginning of their "New Vintage II" capsule collection, one that would use leftover materials from their YSL archive to recreate popular styles from previous seasons. The styles offered in the collection conceived by Creative Director Stefano Pilati would be offered at a significantly lower price point than that of the label's usual items.

It's times like these when I wish I didn't live in the Deep South--the collection is only available at YSL flagship boutiques in London, New York, and Paris. The pieces seem to be limited as well, evidenced by the "1/121" on the tag above. This is a smart decision on YSL's part, I have to say--it's pretty much all profit for them! I suppose it's good that they're not killing more farm creatures to make their beautiful creations than necessary, though..

On a more personal note: exercising hurts. Dang. I'm not terribly overweight, but I wouldn't hurt for me to lose a couple of pounds (except that it does when I run), so I've been trying to be a disciplined individual and at least try to visit the gym briefly everyday for cardio or strength exercises. Does anyone have any low-calorie meal ideas other than salad? I'm beginning to hate the stuff..

Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2010

I always love a multi-textured black ensemble, so this pre-fall collection definitely hits the spot. WWD calls it "cool girl goes to work," and I do have to agree. I would, however, wear anything from these lookbook pictures (which feature Liu Wen--yay for Asian models), anytime. I'm definitely digging the first and third looks with the one-sleeved sweater/scarf and the one shouldered sweater, love. I'd better start finding DIY ways of putting these looks together!

I'm Officially Getting Old

This is an obvious statement: there's a lot of technology out there. Now within all that technology, there are software and Internet developments that can make even the savviest tech-geek's head spin. Within the last three years there seems to have been an explosion of all things web-based; most notably, there has been the advent of social media. I, for one, feel like I am drowning in all of it.

It may be the fact that three years ago, I was just starting my freshman year at college and was far more concerned with other aspects of my then-existence (i.e. making new friends, doing well in classes, drinking, partying, pledging for a sorority, more drinking) to have done a good job in keeping up with all the fancy happenings and goings-on around the Internet. Don't get me wrong, I am not at all tech-allergic. In fact, I embrace it--I always have. Four years before my start at college, when I was a wee freshman in high school, I was the first out of my group of friends to get my hands on an iPod. You know, that clunky--though when I got it, I thought it was the sleekest thing I'd ever owned--edition, sans clickwheel and color screen. I was also the only one of my friends to have figured out the wonderful world of html and various other coding languages; I was the only one to have my own website and domain. I believe I was one of the first to get on the blogger bandwagon when it started nearly a decade ago, but no one read anyone's anything then because there was still a ton of fear surrounding the nebulous online world inside the computer.

Nowadays, there are so many blogs, twitters (what's the point of these, anyway), and faux Facebook pages than you can wrap your head around. The era of the MySpace has passed--that ship sailed the moment Facebook came into the ring with its streamlined interface and college student-only exclusivity (which, ironically, it has done away with). In fact, I think MySpace has a Google deal currently in jeopardy due to its "falling significantly short of expectations,". I'm not complaining, per se, about the advancements in social media. Okay I lied--I am complaining about Twitter--I honestly don't see the point of it aside from being a dedicated Facebook "status update" feed. That, and an essential tool for existing stalkers. Facebook itself has been great for me--unlike MySpace, it had a clean design, and most importantly, it loaded fast. If I was lazy and forgot (didn't want) to bring my camera on an outing with friends, I could see their uploaded albums almost instantaneously--provided that they weren't too lazy themselves to upload them. I've also gotten in contact with many a friend from middle and even elementary school via Facebook, which always makes for a cute conversation topic when you finally see them in person.

However, I'm not one who can be blamed for lack of trying. I might feel like I'm drowning, and I might hate Twitter just because I haven't really used or looked at it more than three times in my life, but I am getting there. Just tonight I've added about five of my favorite blogs to my Google reader in an attempt to keep up with all of them at once. I'm not too optimistic about this venture--I can hardly keep up with the news, nevermind blogs that update 60+ times a day. As I explore all the inventions the great Googleyplex has churned out, I feel like I'm opening my techie eyes for the first time. Perhaps becoming more efficient, and maybe even a little bit smarter.

Layer It On

I find layers to be awe-inspiring. Okay, perhaps I wouldn’t really use such a strong adjective, but really I do love them. This love mainly stems from the fact that I couldn’t be bothered to join a gym all year, and well, when you live on a college campus the stress eating and ease of access to junk food simply pours the pounds on ‘ya.

So to be honest, I like layers not only because they create chic-as-hell silhouettes but also because they serve my flab-hiding needs well. Enter Gemma Degara. One day while at my internship my boss makes a rather excited noise and motions me to her monitor. What I see is this:

I’m excited to say that she plans on carrying them soon, and that I couldn’t be more excited. Crazy cuts and draping? Model randomly standing on a wooden box in a barn? Awesome. More so awesome for the clothing design, but whatever :)

Since then I’ve been doing a little sleuthing and peeking into GD’s past collections. I think it's safe to announce that she is now my newest favorite and most coveted designer. I say this because right now I want every piece I see in her Dripbook. The Barcelona-raised Gemma Degara has been designing since 2003. Her creations have a 180˚ quality about them; you can wear them whichever way you see fit, as long you like how it looks (any side can be the front). I’m definitely all for wearing the same clothing six different ways, especially if they have this much structure and impeccable design.

Soak it in! She has her own Etsy store, so I’m going to try to get my hands on this dress, wish me luck!

Cool in my Keffiyeh

Out for my last day of break before school starts over again. The indecisive weather recently has me layering like crazy (and subsequently looking disheveled and in great need of a shower and nap by mid-afternoon when then weather reaches the high 80s). Nothing too exciting today, just finishing up some errands and hanging out with parents before I’m off to uni again.

Dress, Erin Fetherston for Target. Blue Tank, Alexander Wang. Studded Vest, Zara. Keffiyeh, Ebay. Bag, Gryson. Shoes, Topshop. Ring, Forever21.

Also! I bought this crazy scarf a couple of days ago for my birthday. It's insane, but looks pretty cool, so I'm looking forward to styling it.

What is the Awesomely Delicious?

After a year of following various online publications and blogs, I have finally decided to start my own. This was after much personal dispute, I'll have you know. There are so many personal fashion blogs out there these days (aside from the extremely popular ones like Susie Lau's Style Bubble); I'm sure my blog will really only reach perhaps 0.0001% of the internet's viewers, but I have decided that since there are very fashion bloggers who try to (and can) exist beyond the coasts, I figure someone out there will be able to relate to the little tidbits and comments I'll have to offer. Essentially this blog will be a place for me to muse on all things fashion: my inspirations, my outfits, my random of-the-moment thoughts (although sometimes there will be rants--in Texas there is much to rant about, trust me).
